Identity and Belonging: Reading Together
The Gloucester Racial Justice Team (GRJT) is organizing its third, community-wide book reading project, this time in partnership with Cape Ann Pride (CAP).
The book we are reading is “Pretty: A Memoir” by KB Brookins, an accessible, captivating memoir about race and gender. The book is a winner of the 2025 Lambda Literary Award, and has been described as A fierce and disciplined memoir about queerness, masculinity, and race (Penguin Random House).
Books are available to borrow now from the Sawyer Free Library, or to purchase with a 10% discount at The Bookstore in Gloucester and Susie’s Stories in Rockport.
There will also be some book give-aways at Gloucester’s Juneteenth celebration on June 19, from 9-11 am at City Hall.
In addition to reading the book, participants are encouraged to sign up for one of the several, facilitated discussion groups held at various locations in Gloucester. Participants can sign up for a discussion group at the website: https://grjt.my.canva.site/gloucester-racial-justice-team/
The Gloucester Racial Justice Team and Cape Ann Pride are made up of individuals dedicated to fostering an inclusive and thriving city. Our missions—”to create a safe and welcoming city where people from all races, ethnicities, and cultures can flourish,” and “to advocate for, bring together, celebrate, educate about, and support LGBTQIA+ people through a wide range of events and programs,”— set the stage for this exploration. Identity and Belonging: Reading Together invites the entire community to join this collective endeavor, one that promises not only to enlighten us but also to spur us to action.
