Schooner Adventure
Expedition to Star Island, Isles of Shoals
Monday, June 17- Wednesday, June 19
Set sail with Adventure as Gloucester's flagship schooner embarks on a three-day expedition to the Isles of Shoals in late June! Experience the joys of schooner sailing while connecting these two storied ports. Departing Monday, June 17 and returning Wednesday, June 19, guests will stay ashore at the historic Star Island Hotel, famous for its charm and hospitality.
While on board Adventure, guests will have the opportunity to participate in sailing the ship, learn the history of the dory fishery, and take in the grandeur of the Gulf of Maine. Sea chantey singing encouraged. The Adventure Captain, Expedition Leader, Docents, and Audubon birder will lead teaching, learning, and active participation activities while sailing to and from Star Island and while staying at the Hotel. Upon arrival at the Isle of Shoals, step into a unique setting and leave mainland life behind. Find a rocking chair, read your favorite book, enjoy sunrises, have coffee, and enjoy the company of guests on the shady porch. See why famous impressionist Childe Hassam was so inspired and painted his master works of these Isles. On Appledore Island see the home site of Celia Thaxter; sponsor of musicians, artists, and authors of the Gilded Age. Tour her gardens and the Shoals Marine Labs of Cornell and UNH. Discover and perhaps solve the old mysteries of Smuttynose Island. Birdwatch and explore. Enjoy a cooling swim or row a skiff in Gosport Harbor. Enjoy a special Celebration of the June Summer Solstice.
From June 17-19, guests can choose from Geology or Botany Walks, a polar bear swim, a fascinating Island Systems and Sustainability Tour and/or a spooky Ghost and Graveyards Tour. Additional activities on the island (lectures, tours, lobster bake) are available for a small supplemental charge. Detailed information will be provided upon registration. About The Schooner Adventure:
National Historic Landmark, Schooner Adventure is a 122’ historic wooden dory fishing schooner built in 1926 in Essex, Massachusetts. Designed as a ‘knockabout’ fisherman without a bowsprit for the safety of the crew, Adventure was a “highliner,” the biggest moneymaker of all time, landing nearly $4 million worth of cod and halibut during her fishing career from 1926-1953. Adventure became “Queen of the Windjammers” carrying passengers along the coast of Maine from 1953 until 1988. One of the last surviving Grand Banks dory-fishing schooners, she is a national treasure that has resumed active sailing as an icon of the American fisheries and as a floating classroom for maritime history and environmental education programs. Docked at Maritime Gloucester’s Harriet Webster Pier, she continues to operate at sea, primarily along the New England coast, as a living monument to Massachusetts’ fishing heritage. As such, the Schooner Adventure is important not only to Gloucester, but also to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and all America.
