This lecture is offered in connection with the Sargent House Museum’s Centennial Exhibition featuring Sargent’s charcoal portrait of Charles Sprague Sargent. Richard Ormond, one of the foremost authorities on Sargent, is former deputy director of the National Portrait Gallery and director of the National Maritime Museum and Royal Observatory, in Greenwich England. Ormond is currently working with the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City to mount a show of Sargent’s charcoals, set to open in October of 2019. He is the grandson of Violet Sargent Ormond, sister of John Singer Sargent and a co-founder of the Sargent House Museum. He is coauthor with Elaine Kilmarney of the 7-volume John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonne; his most recent book, John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Charcoal, is due out on October 8, 2019.
