Description
Join us Monday, March 18th at 6:30pm for our Fireside Chat Speaker Series. Engage in conversation about Biotechnology and Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute with Andrea Bodnar, Science Director at GMGI.
Dr. Andrea Bodnar is the Science Director at the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI). She has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from McMaster University in Canada and has held Scientist positions at the National University of Singapore, the Department of Cell Biology and Pharmacology at Geron Corporation, and in the Oncology Department at Hoffmann-La Roche. Andrea’s research interests in the early part of her career were focused on questions relating to human aging and cancer biology. In 2003, she joined the faculty at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and refocused her research to study long-lived marine invertebrates in an effort to understand how these animals live such long and healthy lives in the absence of cancer. With this background at the intersection of marine biology and human health, Andrea joined GMGI in the Summer of 2017. Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is an independent nonprofit research institute founded in 2013 with the mission to conduct world-class marine biotechnology research which expands the regional economy. GMGI’s goals are to (1) apply the most innovative genomic technologies to marine science for new discoveries that impact fisheries and human health, (2) develop a vibrant science learning environment for the youth of Cape Ann including our flagship vocational program, Gloucester Biotechnology Academy, and (3) to promote an active science community in and around Gloucester. In this Fireside Chat, Dr. Bodnar will highlight some of GMGI’s ongoing research and education programs at the frontier of ocean discovery.
