Despite having no formal artistic training, Childe Hassam (1859-1935) was a successful illustrator early in his life, and soon became instrumental in developing Impressionism in the United States in the late 19th century. He spent some summers in Gloucester, joining several major American painters in the region at the invitation of Frank Duveneck (1848-1919). Join us to learn about Hassam’s work, the art colonies he participated in, and his Impressionist view of Gloucester.
You are invited to join us every Thursday for a unique experience. Led by a CAM docent, these deep dives into a single artwork or object from the Collection will begin with conversation, a short presentation and complimentary coffee at the Carlson?Education Center, followed by a special trip to the James Center to view the object being discussed. No special knowledge needed! Just a curiosity to learn more in a small group setting and enjoy a unique experience.
