SUMMARY:Pamela Means presents The Power of the Protest Song at the Old Sloop
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter\, jazz musician\, activist\, and educator Pamela Means will present her program The Power of the Protest Song Friday\, September 30 as part of the Old Sloop Presents performing arts series. The performance will be in the handicap-accessible Fellowship Hall of the First Congregational Church of Rockport\, 12 School St. at 7:30pm.\n\nArmed with razor wit poetry and irresistible charm\, Pamela's "stark\, defiant songs" (New York Times Magazine) set fire to the stage and the status quo. This family-friendly event will explore the origin stories and lineages of protest songs\, how their meanings and impacts continue to transform through time and space\, and how they inspire movements and cultural shifts within the realms of racial and social justice. Pamela will share her own experiences with becoming an artist and using her voice. The program includes both original songs and well-known protest songs\, demonstrating how grounding\, unifying\, and mobilizing protest songs can be. Pamela is presenting this program at cities and towns across Massachusetts with the support of the Mass Cultural Council.
