SUMMARY:CAMTalk: Exhibition Series -- Charlie Lowe and the Gloucester Daily Times
DESCRIPTION:Charles A. Lowe\, "Charlie\," was the first staff photographer at the Gloucester Daily Times\, a position he held for nearly 25 years. Former Times?reporter and city editor John Christie\, who covered many assignments with Lowe\, will discuss how Lowe professionalized the Times?photography\, moving away from static shots to coverage of breaking news and candid shots documenting the life of his beloved city. Through his Nikon\, Lowe captured the faces of Gloucester: faces lined from years of hard work\, frustrated at City Hall\, joyful at a football game\, relaxed at a mug up. \n\nLowe's influence can be seen in the GDT?staff photographers covered in the current special exhibition\, Above the Fold: The Photographers of the "Gloucester Daily Times\," 1973-2005\, which Christie supported as a volunteer researcher. \n\nJohn Christie is a veteran journalist who has worked as a reporter\, editor and publisher for newspapers in Massachusetts\, Maine and Florida. From 1971 to 1978\, he was the city hall reporter and city editor of the Gloucester Daily Times\, where he won awards for his investigative reporting and feature writing. From 1978 to 1982\, he covered the Massachusetts statehouse for the Times?and other papers owned by Dow Jones & Co. His work has appeared in the Boston Globe\, Boston?magazine\, Yankee?magazine\, the Boston Phoenix\, NPR-affiliate WBUR and elsewhere. In 2014\, the New England Academy of Journalists awarded him the Yankee Quill for his lifetime contribution to journalism. \n\n?The Cape Ann Museum acknowledges the?North of Boston Media Group?and the Gloucester Daily Times?for sponsoring and assisting?in the creation of Above the Fold and The Clara E. and John H. Ware Jr. Foundation for their support of the CAM Photo Archives and the initiatives of the Library & Archives.
